Finally Steve Jobs reveal the iPad, the so long awaited Apple’s tablet, and to be honest it doesn’t cover my expectations at all. I think it’s not so revolutionary neither the best invention in Apple’s history.
Looking at its specs, this is my list of pros and cons:
Pros:
- Uses a reliable and solid operating system like iPhone OS
- Nice design based on the successful iPhone and iPod Touch
- Decent battery life
- Compatible with existing AppStore applications and games
- $499 for the 16GB model is not so bad
- Supports open eBook format ePub
- Plays video H.264 up to 720p and 30 fps, a win versus actual netbooks
Cons:
- No multitasking
- No camera neither webcam
- No phone calls
- Reading an eBook on a LED-Backlit display is much worst than on an eInk display. Kindle wins.
- No memory expansion slot
- Write documents on a big touch keyboard doesn’t seem to be very practical
- Ugly iPhone style button
Would I buy the iPad?
Maybe, and only for surfing the web or watching movies on the go. Without multitasking I can’t even think on writing documents or reports on it if I had to search for information on the web at the same time. But who knows, Apple can add at any moment multitouch support to the iPhone OS.
Overall, I think that Apple’s iPad is a great product, although still not a real threat for eBook Readers and netbooks. It’s just another player in this crazy technology game.
