Apple iPad Prons and Cons

27/01/2010 | Category(s): Gadgets | No Comments »

apple-ipad
Finally Steve Jobs reveal the iPad, the so long awaited Apple’s tablet, and to be honest it doesn’t cover my expectations at all. I think it’s not so revolutionary neither the best invention in Apple’s history.

Looking at its specs, this is my list of pros and cons:

Pros:

  • Uses a reliable and solid operating system like iPhone OS
  • Nice design based on the successful iPhone and iPod Touch
  • Decent battery life
  • Compatible with existing AppStore applications and games
  • $499 for the 16GB model is not so bad
  • Supports open eBook format ePub
  • Plays video H.264 up to 720p and 30 fps, a win versus actual netbooks

Cons:

  • No multitasking
  • No camera neither webcam
  • No phone calls
  • Reading an eBook on a LED-Backlit display is much worst than on an eInk display. Kindle wins.
  • No memory expansion slot
  • Write documents on a big touch keyboard doesn’t seem to be very practical
  • Ugly iPhone style button

Would I buy the iPad?

Maybe, and only for surfing the web or watching movies on the go. Without multitasking I can’t even think on writing documents or reports on it if I had to search for information on the web at the same time. But who knows, Apple can add at any moment multitouch support to the iPhone OS.

Overall, I think that Apple’s iPad is a great product, although still not a real threat for eBook Readers and netbooks. It’s just another player in this crazy technology game.

Hey, look at this two videos!!! Are they showing the real Apple iSlate, iBook, iTablet or whatever it’s gonna call? They both seem to be pretty real.

Nevertheless, we’ll have to wait until Steve Jobs appears on stage today at 10AM Pacific Time and reveals Apple’s latest creation.

3 Killer Twitter Clients for Google Chrome

10/01/2010 | Category(s): Software | 1 Comment »

Since the official launch of Chrome Extensions site, one of the most requested extensions are those for use Twitter directly from the browser.

The very first Twitter client for Chrome was Chromed Bird, an excellent extension that keeps improving with each update. But this is not the only one, there also other nice Twitter clients for Chrome to choose among that really worth trying. Those ones are Chrowety and Kutano. So lest’s take a look at each one features so you can choose your favorite one:

Chromed Bird

chromed-bird-twitter
This is my favorite Twitter client for Chrome. It has support for timeline, replies and direct messages reading,
sending tweets, and the latest version includes lists viewing and drag n drop tab reordering. It uses OAtuh for login authentication and its source code is available at http://wiki.github.com/cezarsa/chromed_bird

Chrowety

chrowety-twitter
This extension has a nice user interface, with lots of options to customize it from its configuration panel. Besides tweeting, timeline, replies, DMs and favorites support, its list viewing support it’s really good. It also has new tweets alerts notification popups, tweets translating and preview for images and videos shared through Twitpic and YouTube.

Login can be done through OAuth or Twitter API. Check out Chrowety’s source code on http://code.google.com/p/chrowety

Kutano

kutano-twitter
Similar to Chromed Bird and Chrowety, this extension has support for sending tweets and reading the timeline, replies and DMs. It also has pictures preview and geolocation support showing your location on a small maps. One cool feature is that it shows the tweets that mention the website you are visiting, letting you know the social buzz of that site.

This client has two drawbacks in my opinion, one is the lack of Twitter lists support, and the other is that you need a Kutano account in order to use it.

If you like Chrome Extensions, don’t forget to check out these 10 excellent Chrome extensions.

world-maps-of-social-networks
There no doubt that 2009 was the year of Facebook, reaching the incredible number of more than 350 millions users around the globe and leaving the other social networks far behind it.

To confirm this, an updated World Map of Social Networks has been build, based on data from Alexa & Google Trends for Websites traffic data for December 2009. Taking a look at it we can made some observations:

- Facebook has almost colonized Europe and it’s extending its domination with more than 200 millions users
- QQ, leader in China, is the largest social network of the world (300 millions active accounts)
- MySpace lost its leadership everywhere (except in Guam)
- V Kontakte is the most popular in Russian territories
- Orkut is strong in India and Brazil
- Hi5 is still leading in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador and other scattered countries such as Portugal, Mongolia, Romania
- Odnoklassniki is strong in some former territories of the Soviet Union
- Maktoob is the most important Arab community/portal

Will Facebook finally conquer the entire world in 2010? Who knows? Anything is possible.
